In My Words

"Don't ever lose faith in who you are, for that's what makes you different.
Don't try to turn yourself into someone everyone else is, for if that happens, the world is a poorer place."

An open letter to Zhonghuarians

Dear students, friends,

You have given me some of the best times i've had during my short return back to Singapore, and it is a great honour to have shared the same classroom as all of you, albeit i wear something different. Your ebullience, enthusiasm and youth are all gifts which have been bestowed upon each and every one of you. Use these gifts wisely.

There is no greater future than one which you worked for, one that is shining, and one that is full of purpose and meaning. Life as a student is not easy to appreciate, and the age-old adage - The grass is always greener on the other side, comes aptly to mind. But studenthood is a process which we have to go through in order to create for ourselves a future in which we retain control over our fates.

We can choose to take life easy as a student, to do the bare minimum in school, to marginally pass every exam. But all these fallibilities will return to haunt you once you fail to reap what you have tried to sow.

The harvest in the plains of academic reward is fair, but is unfortunately competitive. True industry, determination, effort and application will be recognised and rewarded. It is also true that sloppiness, disinterest, carelessness and inaptitude will be identified and penalised. You have a chance to compete on an equal footing with the very best in the world, aim to excel, and you will succeed.

I return today to London, where i will continue my life as a student. By the time i next return, many of you would have entered the next phase of your life as a student. Be it JC, polytechnic or any other specialised institution, I wish to see each and every one of you happy and contented, and celebrating a good harvest at the 'O' Levels.

However, decent grades do not make a decent person. In your pursuit of academic excellence, I pray that you will remember how it is like to be unfortunate, to be unequal, and to be ordinary. Take time to reflect before you say a harsh word, take time to be humble before you exude pride, take time to teach after you have been taught, take time to share what has been shared with you, and take time to appreciate every one as an equal, lest you slip back.
Never forget the journey you embarked on, and the people you meet along the way, for memories are meant to be beautiful, when the world they exist in, no longer exists.

-------------------------------------------------

I once wrote a poem in celebration of my teachers, i now share it with all of you.

You are the moulders of dreams
In your hand lies the hopes of a million
You are the spark that sets aflame the poet's pen
or imbue the tune from a musicians hand

The inspiration of every young mind
Entrenched in the memory of every made one
Our beaming smiles, our heartfelt thanks
Tears in the aura of sweet success
The greatest gratitude, the only satisfaction
Emanating from the noblest ideals of determination

You are the guardians of a million dreams
Your patient work keeps the flame of learning ablaze
Your midas touch makes you the God of Hope
The God who fills our souls with promise,
and makes our dreams come true.

Never hate your teachers, be they weak or capable. For they give their life to helping you build yours.

I am going to miss every one of you at Zhonghua, and whether you like geography or not, the river between us will always flow.
