End of my first week here at SPH and it's been an okay experience so far. On one hand I'm glad that i'm not doing menial work like photocopying and cold calling, but on the other hand, I've been given deadlines that don't really give me time to learn how the system works. But as one of my copy editors mentioned, this is a time where if you float, you'll stay afloat. if you sink, you sink and disappear from sight.Couple of amusing things I encountered. Was looking through a list of participants for this School of Rock competition SPH is organising and I look at the kids there. One was named... Ryu Pong. There's a girl named Remus Cha, and a guy named Juliana, and another named audrey. I REALLY wonder whether kids nowadays are so confused or it was a simple typo. i HOPE it's a typo. Secondly. the email addresses are ridiculous! i've got email addresses like punkster_punkrawk_punkpunk_dontcare@hotmail.com. WTF??? it's ok. youths nowadays don't really appreciate what is functionality. or is it hotmail's fault? perhaps they should have a site named coldmail as well. looking at the names of the groups, i don't know whether to feel happy that some creativity is shown or feel sad for the english language. names like RiLoadeXeZeX don't really make much sense to me. ok lah, there is a limited amount of words in the language vaguely suited for the use of a rock band, but this is kinda pushing it a little. c'mon kids, more creativity! but apart from that it's been refreshing to be told to write succinctly and simply. it's a big difference from having to use as many words as possible, and complicated and advanced words during law exams. It's a welcome change but i look forward to the weekend when i don't have to stay late in office. my first week has been ridiculous, clocking mroe than 50 hours already. But i guess that's life in the newsroom for you. Hectic, fast paced, and with 100% precision. Sounds like a lawyer's job to me. kelvin was inspired at 1:15 PM |
